Giant’s Head Mountain Trails Redevelopment Plan
BENCH Site Design was retained by the District of Summerland to prepare a master trails redevelopment plan for its largest park, Giant’s Head Mountain Park.
The park’s fragile ecosystem was being compromised by rogue trails and erosion resulting from increasing recreational use. The exploratory phase of the master plan process included public and stakeholder consultation, a thorough inventory and analysis, and an environmental assessment that identified areas of special concern. A vision and goals for the park were established with the District and stakeholders, and the resulting trail network plan focussed on decommissioning redundant and rogue trails, prioritizing alignments that minimize erosion, and removing trails from particularly sensitive areas of the park. Also included in this work were conceptual plans for key amenities and facilities within the park.
